Bio

Carlos Womack (American, b. 1994) lives and works in London, UK. Womack holds a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design (United States of America, 2016) and an MA in the Conservation of Books and Library Materials from West Dean College (United Kingdom, 2022). Womack has exhibited in the United States and the United Kingdom, most notably at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2024 and 2025.

Statement

Carlos Womack makes oil paintings inspired by Baroque Flemish painting, the internet, and images from his personal life. He brings these different sources together to create figurative compositions that unfold through shifting, loosely connected narratives.

Womack begins without a fully resolved plan. Images and ideas develop through sketches, everyday experiences, historical paintings, and the process of painting itself. He often draws on details from earlier works to solve compositional problems, bringing unexpected elements into his paintings and creating new relationships between figures, architecture, nature, and paint.

The resulting works are layered and ambiguous, balancing moments of tension, fiction, history, and contemporary life. Rather than offering a fixed narrative or conclusion, Womack allows the paintings to remain open to different interpretations.

Working simultaneously on paper and canvas, Womack’s paintings develop slowly, often over several months. They reflect the movement of his own wandering mind and invite viewers to pause, explore, and wander through their own.
